National Association of Social Workers Supports Steve Friday for Congress

Dexter’s dark horse candidate gets prestigious endorsement

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), representing 120,000 members, and its Political Action for Candidates (PACE), are putting their weight behind Michigan Democratic Progressive Caucus candidate Steve Friday prior to the August party primaries, putting Friday head to head with Gretchen Driskell, the other Democrat vying for the Democratic nomination to oppose Republican Congressman Tim Walberg who holds Michigan’s 7th Congressional District seat.

“Almost half of the 7th District’s children are counted as low-income,” Friday said, “and more than one in four Michigan children live below an artificially low poverty line. Students are graduating from college as lifelong debtors. Working class and middle-class families can nosedive into financial ruin with one catastrophic illness. The administration is currently at work shredding what’s left of a meager safety net, as it prosecutes a war on immigrants and people of color who already suffer disproportionately. The Trump administration, with the full support of Representative Walberg on issues related to this matter, has opened a terrible wound in an already suffering body politic.

“The National Association of Social Workers represents the nation’s frontline relief workers in this ongoing struggle and the eminent emerging social catastrophe. They’ve depended on Democrats running as Republican-Lites for a long time and watched the situation worsen steadily. It’s like the old Who lyrics: ‘We won’t get fooled again!’”

Friday proudly calls himself a “Berniecrat,” identifying with the insurgent campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination. Friday believes the Senator would have beaten Donald Trump handily in a head-to-head. The people of the 7th Congressional District threw their support behind Senator Sanders’ presidential bid because they believed in his platform and his mission. Like Senator Sanders, Steve is not taking any corporate PAC money and is relying on individual contributions to fund his grassroots campaign.
Friday’s harshest words, however, were reserved for the incumbent himself.

“This is a fight for millions of lives in a moment of peril, and the 7th Congressional District in Michigan is reprehensibly represented by Congressman Tim Walberg. Right Wing Watch called him, ‘one of the ten most dangerous members of Congress.’ Walberg supported every job-killing trade agreement that slithered out of Wall Street’s back rooms. The Congressman wants to dismantle Social Security and Medicare—another Wall Street ambition. He has voted 98.5 percent of the time with the current administration and boasted about his record of support for the Trump administration at a townhall on Monday in Monroe.

Friday has first-hand experience. In his career as a social worker, Friday—an Air Force veteran and son of Detroit auto worker—has assisted thousands with special health care needs, financial hardships, disabilities, health crises, Medicare, Medicaid, social security-disability benefits, sexual abuse, substance abuse, violence, serious mental health issues, unemployment, aging, and death and dying.

“It’s a three-step process. Step one: Displace those elected officials who give false hope and then vote against the best interests of their constituents by throwing their support behind their corporate masters. Step two: Develop a comprehensive, best-practices social safety net to support the resilient survivors of the 7th Congressional District and give them the opportunity and supports needed to recognize their dreams. Step three: Build stronger community through the strengthening of the unions again; provide free universal health care for all, provide free education through college, inaugurate a massive public works jobs program to repair the environment, and provide debt relief for homeowners, students, and the victims of predatory lending.”

Steven Friday, Social Worker, Veteran, Researcher, and Activist Begins “Human First” Campaign for U.S. Congress in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District

Dexter — U.S. Congressional Candidate Steven Friday has announced his candidacy to unseat unpopular Congressman Tim Walberg in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District.

In what is sure to be a very exciting Democratic primary season and a turning point in elections in the state of Michigan, a group of grassroots organizations are supporting candidates to challenge the party establishment’s old way of electoral politics.

Steven Friday has begun organizing a grassroots team to mobilize the people of the 7th District who have become disenfranchised, disempowered, and apathetic about their chances of having an impact on the political system that so seriously negatively affects their lives.
“Too many people are struggling to survive the serious income and wealth inequality and lack of social justice that our current system has put in place.”  Friday said, when speaking to protesters in Representative Walberg’s Jackson office.  “The most vulnerable among us will be made to suffer.  We are the warriors.  We are the fighters.  We must get the word out that there is a movement happening that will finally bring the power back to the people, ALL people.  This is our fight and our campaign to lose.”

Friday’s team is made up of members from many local grassroots groups.  Steve stated, “They have underestimated us for too long.  Our skills, our talents, our passion, and our dedication to all of the people of this district will bring this movement to the forefront of local, state, and federal politics.  Whether they are Democrats, Republicans, Independents or aligned with any party or group, there is a space for everyone on this team.  We are human first and we must remember that our differences are our strength.  We need to prevent ourselves from being divided up.  This allows us to be controlled.  We shall not be forgotten or thrown away any longer.  We cannot be bought and sold like a commodity.  We are here to take the power back!  We are Human First!”

The primary election is Tuesday, August 7th, 2018. You can learn more about Steven Friday and his campaign by visiting
